Hi, I'm attempting to push my G3258 to 4.5 GHz using the BIOS settings, but it's not activating properly—it only shows 222 cb. I'm using the stock cooler, a H81m P33 motherboard, 8 GB RAM, and adding a GTX 970 in a week. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi. Just a quick note—checked the task manager and noticed the CPU hits 4.5 GHz under stress. Probably fine?
Likely, your benchmarks are low because there’s a lot of unnecessary stuff installed.

The G3258 struggles to adequately supply power to a gtx970 in current games, even at 5GHz. This suggests your testing might not be accurate or you're dealing with a lot of inefficiency that's further hampering your already slow processor.

Thanks for the reply... Would you like to verify if the OC is functioning properly? Posting an image of CPU-z might help. Also, regarding the multiplier in CPUz showing (8-45) but capping at 3200mhz under load—this is your first time here, thanks!

Here’s a revised version of your message:

I’m wondering if there’s a way to verify the OC is functioning. Should I upload an image of CPU-z? Also, the multiplier in CPUz ranges from 8 to 45 but only goes up to 3200mhz when under load. This is my first time here... Thanks!
First, a 4.5GHz value seems to be the turbo setting for one core during heavy use. You might actually be reaching around 4.2 or 4.3GHz when fully loaded.
Anyway, open Task Manager, go to Performance, then CPU. Then run Prime95 diagnostics to check the frequency under "speed." It should fluctuate before settling at about 100% load after Prime95 begins.
CPU-Z likely gives accurate readings, so you probably won’t exceed around 3.2GHz. That’s surprising given the BIOS shows 4.5GHz.
Avoid using the Intel CPU Diagnostic unless you restart; it will stick to default settings until then. You should try it for testing, not to confirm an overclock.

The G3258 struggles to adequately support a GTX970 in current games even at 5GHz, indicating there may be issues with your testing or the presence of significant performance issues.
Your feedback doesn't align with the situation.
With a G3258 paired with a GTX970, overclocking at 5GHz would yield a 56% improvement compared to 3.2GHz. At 4.4GHz it would offer a 40% boost, potentially increasing the frame rate past 40FPS.
It seems the bottleneck lies elsewhere, possibly due to other software consuming CPU resources.
The CPU frequency remains at its maximum, and games won't throttle it further because other processes are using the cycles.
In reality, overclocking reduces the negative effect of competing programs—lower usage at 3.2GHz means a more noticeable gain, around 15% at 4.4GHz.
Your comments don't reflect the actual performance dynamics.

There appears to be a problem that could stop the G3258 from running overclocked. This might not affect you, but it's likely that after booting into Windows your overclock is turned off. This could be due to Intel CPU Diagnostic, possibly activating its microcode during the Windows boot and disabling the feature. It is recommended to reach out to MSI if you cannot resolve the issue.
