Hello! I’m working on a gradual upgrade plan to eventually reach a solid 4K gaming setup.
Current components (full configuration):
CQ27G2 monitor with a budget side monitor
Red Devil 6700xt
Ryzen 5600x
A single fan air cooler
1TB SSD
16GB 3200MHz RAM
ROG Strix b550-f
Fractal North white with glass side panel
Razer Barracuda white headphones
Glorious model O with a great mousepad
Glorious GMMK 2
A standard black "podcast" microphone
My planned upgrades are listed in order and should take about two years.
Dell G3223Q monitor (still using the old 2K monitor, just vertically oriented)
LAGKAPTEN / ALEX desk
Some Art3D backplates
Stream Deck
Samsung SSD 990 Pro 2TB
Top GPU available at the time (4090 close)
Best gaming processor available at the time
Unknown motherboard (I’m aiming for PCIe 5 but currently no good AM5 boards or future Intel socket ones support it well, so I haven’t decided yet)
Water cooling options:
Corsair hydro X series XR5 360mm
three ML120 PRO LED White 120mm
EK-XRES 140 Revo D5 PWM (includes pump)
RTX 5090 white cooling block
EK-Quantum Velocity² D-RGB - AM5 White Edition
Good tubing and fittings
Any coolant you recommend?
I’ve done extensive research and just want to know if anyone has tips or concerns about component values. I’m planning this a long time ahead, but the effects are already here. Thank you!
Also, I tried to prioritize items that won’t need major changes in the future first.

Yes, I'm seeking guidance on selecting available parts that can back the upcoming generation.

Your top choice is to accumulate savings until you can construct the system yourself from the beginning. You’ll never be content trying to assemble a system in stages. Honestly, none of the advertised upgrades—except for a CPU and GPU—will significantly enhance your gaming experience. A 990 pro won’t make any real difference and is too expensive. There’d be no measurable improvement compared to a $50 cheaper WD SN850x. Gen 5 PCI-E offers no benefit either. A 4090 only drops around 2-3% on gen 3, so a 5090 won’t saturate a gen 4 x16 lane slot. It’s unclear if any upcoming Intel boards will support gen 5, even though current models do. Any AMD B650e or x670e also supports gen 5.
