Linus likely reviewed a home web filtering and parental control solution. No specific model or link was shared, as it wasn’t found on YouTube.

It's a gadget you connect to your current network. It's intended for a family member.

It varies with your budget, but I've utilized a Firewalla for my IoT gadgets to monitor data flow and restrict it—offering more features than just that. Based on required speed, you might suffice with the Red or Blue models, delivering around 100Mbps and roughly 500Mbps respectively. For maximum gigabit performance, you'll have to wait for the gold version.

I suggest opting for solutions that don’t require subscriptions or open-source licenses. If you prefer not to install your own hardware (like using an old computer), you can purchase a PFSENSE device (https://www.pfsense.org/products/). The main drawback is it doesn’t automatically start, but there are many YouTube tutorials available. Another option is PiHolé (https://pi-hole.net/), a DNS filtering tool to block unwanted content. You’d mainly adjust DNS settings on protected devices or configure PiHolé as the router’s DNS. Lists for PiHolé can be located at (https://filterlists.com/). These lists also work well in commercial firewalls or content filtering systems. I’ve tried these tools on other networks and found them highly effective. I previously used a PFSENSE SG-1100 with PiHolé on my home setup for security. In the long term, this might help you avoid subscription costs. I’m a former cyber transport technician and don’t receive compensation or benefits from mentioning these products.

I've been going this way with two teens at home, testing every router—Netgear, Linksys, Synology, ASUS, and more. Eventually, I went with ASUS. It offers the strongest parental controls; you can define time limits, web filters, and customize a blacklist. However, HTTPS sites (like most porn sites) are still allowed. I've tried all brands and methods, but blocking HTTPS traffic remains impossible. I'm curious about your approach if you manage to block those sites. These two kids are clever—they discovered sites like rabb.it and set up tunnels for themselves. I even had to add key loggers on their computers to keep an eye on them. SMH...

Pi-hole will handle this as well in that scenario. If tunneling is involved, securing your router and adding DNS redirection features—along with port blocking and other methods—should be implemented. Certain routers support blocking VPN and proxy services; Pi-hole can do the same if the correct list is used and all device DNS traffic is redirected. A firewall can achieve the same result, blocking traffic that mimics a VPN or similar protocols. You can verify the list below with various adblockers (for example). DD-WRT is useful for flashing your router to increase network control (https://dd-wrt.com/ ). DD-WRT offers many more features than standard firmware. Follow the website instructions carefully and avoid disconnecting the device during setup. If you opt for this path or purchase a pre-flashed unit, be aware that incorrect actions may brick your router.
