I haven’t tested anything yet, but I just discovered the PCIe slot is Gen 5!? I think it supports speeds like 5.0 > 3.0 > 3.0, which explains why my 2080Ti works. But as you mentioned, it might not be possible to go back down again.

Sure, my clarification works for version 5.0 too. PCI Express offers backward compatibility. It seems the issue comes from going from high to low speed or vice versa.

After a mix-up with Amazon claiming delivery when it wasn't, I finally received my PCIe-4.0 riser cable. To avoid disappointment, I tried to install the new card and kept my 2980ti running while avoiding touching the connectors. Everything seems fine. I managed to handle a heavy gaming session (Unreal5 didn’t hit any FPS limits) and it performed well, reaching over 400W according to Nvidia’s data. Now I’m unsure whether to install a waterblock for the card. I’m frustrated with water cooling but my 2080ti only goes up to 50°C with a 12900k.

Awesome! I totally get it... hitting around 50c really works great!
