It seems you're unsure about something and prefer to avoid piracy altogether.

I avoid actions that might fall into ambiguous legal territory. That's clear.

When people talk about abandoned sites on Microsoft's technet forums and some MS employees recommend them, it looks like the situation is mostly clear on the "ready to use" side. But if you're looking for genuine MS-DOS and need full legal compliance, original disks can be bought on eBay, which is completely legal.

@zombienerd Seems like you're in decent condition, right? The photo looks pretty solid too—no obvious yellowing on the plastic. Nice work! I own a PS/2 model 30 with a VGA monitor back then; it got lost in a house fire, though.

They provided the source code here, so it’s not abandoned. You can compile it yourself (though I don’t know how). They also have the executable files available. Edited January 12, 2019 by Guest

I completely missed that! Everything is covered by the MIT license, so it's fully open-source now. This means you're free to take everything—including the binaries—and use it however you like. I actually rely on the MIT license myself.

Even for the 2.0 release, it's possible to obtain every available binary from the web without problems, though I don't know about the 3.0 version.
