I frequently encounter videos where creators mention things like "This is running at 30 fps with FRAPs, but without, it runs at about 50fps"...... Is this due to them recording with FRAPs or simply because they are using FRAPs to display the frame rate (by keeping FRAPs open in the system tray so the small yellow numbers indicating FPS appear in the game window)? TL;DR - Does running FRAPs affect my FPS?

The recording sets your frame rate to 24, 30, 60 or any value during the session. The frame rate display remains stable while recording but changes when not in use.

Running rapid bursts won't impact your FPS. Using the recording or benchmark tools will cause a noticeable decrease in FPS.

If you have a decent PC and a high refresh rate monitor, sacrificing some performance to reach 60 FPS for recording with Fraps might still impact gameplay, depending on how much you reduce frame rates. The real gameplay could be affected if the drop is significant.
