Recently, I've observed a worsening issue. After periods of inactivity, I begin using my computer to play games for approximately 20-30 minutes. Subsequently, I experience a noticeable drop in frames per second (FPS), typically ranging from 40 to 70, depending on the game. Furthermore, when my games become heated, the FPS becomes remarkably inconsistent. For example, with Rocket League, I frequently achieve a smooth 240 FPS, but as my laptop warms up, the frame rate fluctuates wildly between 200 and 90 FPS. While this might not seem severe, it significantly impacts gameplay. I encounter substantial lag in movement and it truly feels like the game is running at only a fraction of its intended speed. In Rainbow Six, my FPS consistently remains below 20 frames. I’m uncertain about the root cause, though I recognize that my computer generates substantial heat—too hot to comfortably touch. I utilized a temperature monitoring program, which indicated that my CPU cores were consistently reaching approximately 90 degrees Celsius during these FPS dips. Additionally, I’m concerned that my graphics card may be running low on memory due to constant high utilization. It's possible a simple cleaning of my laptop’s vents would resolve the problem, but I sought your advice to determine if another issue might be involved as I lack technical expertise. My drivers are current.

Hardware Specifications:
Graphics Card: GTX 1060 3GB VRAM
Memory: 16 GB RAM (10 GB available)
Processor: i7 7700HQ

Indeed, this indicates a problem with overheating, which is causing the frame rate to decrease due to thermal regulation. Please ensure your laptop’s cooling system is properly maintained.

Could you recommend one of those air canisters? I attempted to remove the base panel from my laptop, but it wouldn’t detach readily and I didn't want to force it, so I ultimately gave up.

Yeah, that should work. Not all laptops are open-friendly, so you might as well just use the air wherever possible.

I’ve been investigating the situation and plan to try applying new thermal adhesive, along with adjusting voltage settings for my CPU and GPU, tomorrow. I’m hoping this resolves all the issues.
