I am experiencing significant and frequent frame rate drops while gaming on my Dell G5 5587 laptop. My system specifications are: Intel® Core™ i7-8750H CPU @ 2.20GHz 2.21 GHz, 16.0 GB RAM, and a GeForce GTX 1060 with Max-Q Design 6GB. I am connected to an AOC G2590FX monitor. These drops occur across all games, irrespective of their age or graphical settings. Despite running games on ultra high settings, task manager indicates normal performance, but I consistently observe FPS fluctuations, dropping from 144 to 15 and then returning. This severely impacts my ability to play multiplayer games. I am utilizing a cooling pad, although the laptop remains hot. I have attempted various troubleshooting methods found online, including adjusting Windows settings, but these efforts have been unsuccessful. Assistance is needed urgently.

Experiencing temperature problems? As time passes, these devices often require manual intervention... Perhaps the thermal paste for your CPU and GPU has become inactive and requires replacement? Have you verified whether thermal throttling is occurring?

You can check clock speeds and confirm thermal throttling with Intel Extreme Tuning Utility:

Higher resolution monitors demand more processing power from the GPU, while lower resolutions shift that load to the CPU.

I’m uncertain whether this indicates a positive or negative outcome. My monitor resolution is identical to my laptop, both set at 1920 x 1080p.

The external monitor issue stems from a driver problem. Utilizing both the laptop screen and an external monitor constitutes a multi-monitor setup, which increases power consumption. Updating the driver might resolve this—provided the developers addressed it.
