Hello TH Crew! It has been a while since my last visit, as I recently assembled my second PC based on hardware and software tips from one of Jason's projects on PC builder YouTube.
So far, the build has performed well, though it may be too powerful for older games I still enjoy. Recently, performance dropped significantly on titles that heavily rely on the GPU. All my games are also running smoothly on STEAM, as mentioned.
I’m unsure if the issue began after I installed CIV 5 and its DirectX updates. When I selected version 12, the game froze during launch. After rebooting and choosing version 11, it worked fine. However, other games slowed down noticeably. This isn’t as noticeable when playing non-gaming titles like Cyberpunk, but anything above 10 FPS feels unacceptable.
This behavior became more apparent after the CIV5 launch problem, prompting me to try UBOAT again. It initially worked for the game but then returned to a black screen with the gold mouse pointer at the home menu.
Eventually, I found a workaround by adjusting Windows Gaming settings and selecting my GPU model in-game. This resolved the issue for most titles, though using UBOAT still leaves me with poor FPS.
I’ve also checked the AMD website for driver updates and ensured my system is up to date, though I haven’t changed the motherboard. The Windows update appears current.
Is this related to DirectX or MS Visual? I’m not very familiar with those tools—just whatever STEAM or games load for me.
EDIT - I’ve also disabled the Steam Overlay feature.
EDIT - PC System Specs have been updated.
Welcome to the forums, newcomer! Please note the make and model of your PSU. If it has been in use for some time, mention its age. What is the BIOS version on your motherboard right now? You might want to try these steps:
Open BIOS, turn off the iGPU. In the operating system, use DDU to eliminate all GPU drivers (Intel, Nvidia, AMD) in Safe Mode, then install the newest driver manually via an elevated command—right-click the installer and select Run as Administrator. You’ll need to download the latest GPU driver from the provided link.
Thanks Titan! I had previously had an account here about 10 years ago when I built my first PC but lost that account name.
The PC and all its components are new - just built it all in April. Updated the specs now in the original post too.
The BIOS version is now 3.10, I just updated it successfully. I think I'm going to see if I can grab that AMD graphics driver update for the mobo too - looks like there's a recent one from August posted on Asrock's page - AMD graphics driver ver:24.10.24.240625a
