Good Morning All,
I’m completely confused. I recently completed a new build a few weeks back, and everything worked perfectly at first—my system was the fastest I’d ever assembled. But then, a few days ago, unexpected problems appeared. When I started my PC, it would repeatedly power off and on multiple times before finally opening the Windows login screen. Later, after logging in, the machine would freeze for a few minutes, though I could still hear audio, like conversations over Discord. After these strange occurrences and reboots, everything seemed normal again. I’d play games for hours without issues.

I tried several fixes: reconnecting all components, checking connections, updating drivers, reinstalling them. Now the situation has shifted. I’m booting up fine and not freezing, but when using gaming apps like Hunt Showdown, Escape from Tarkov, or Heaven Benchmark, I consistently get only 8-15 FPS. Even streaming services such as Netflix and YouTube are functioning perfectly. The weirdest part is that videos play at full speed, but the game performance remains terrible. After a few restarts and changing the display port slot, things returned to normal, though this morning it happened again with 8-15 FPS.

I have the following specs:
- 5950x AMD @ 4.3GHz (previously 4.5GHz, tried lowering for optimization)
- EVGA 3080ti FTW3
- 64GB Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 3600 (4 sticks)
- 1TB WD_BLACK NVMe SSD
- SilverStone 1000W PSU
- Lian Li Vertical GPU mount (PCIe 4.0)

Please let me know what’s going on or if there’s anything I missed. Thanks for your help.

I was under the impression the vertical mount GPU was due to the case design receiving the MB the other direction, vs an adapter being used. Otherwise I'd definitely had recommended going without the vertical mount Pci-e adapter. I don't recommend adapters of any kind on MBs, especially on something as critical as the GPU. Just too much risk with connection reliability and latency.
Then again, you said you tested thoroughly with games first and this didn't happen, and I didn't hear you say it wasn't set up that way initially. So I would try to think hard if you made any changes at all, software or hardware wise, before this started happening. Even plugging the PC into a different wall outlet, as sometimes those can be problematic too...

This situation didn't happen by coincidence after you started using Discord with the new PC, correct? I've noticed Discord can frequently lead to game issues, such as frequent crashes. You might want to uninstall the app and then run a malware and system file corruption scan using Malwarebytes and SFC.

Also, verify all hardware connections. If everything worked initially but no new hardware was added, it may not be the issue. Did you previously test with graphics-heavy games? If you have access to a spare GPU and PSU, you could try testing them with a friend to help identify the problem.

Ensure your RAM is operating at its rated speed by enabling XMP mode. This is especially important for Ryzen CPUs due to their Infinity Fabric interconnect, which depends on proper RAM speeds. It's also wise to test with one or two RAM sticks at a time.

Most systems don't use four RAM sticks in gaming PCs, and given the higher latency from Ryzen's Infinity Fabric compared to Intel's CPUs, it might not be advisable. Latency can also cause issues when using multiple RAM sticks.

I don't believe Discord is the main cause since I normally play Escape from Tarkov while streaming on Discord and watching my other two friends stream EFT without any problems (Game on Monitor 1, Discord on Monitor 2). Still, I tried uninstalling Discord but the issue kept happening. All connections seem fine, though I don’t have a spare PSU/GPU at the moment. I ran some benchmark tests after building the PC, and everything was great—games ran smoothly with high FPS and no stutters or spikes. My RAM is set correctly with XMP (or AMD’s version) enabled and at the right voltage. I also checked it using Windows Diagnostic and found zero errors. I’ll try using only two sticks of RAM (32GB 2x16) to see if that makes a difference, but I’m not very optimistic. I ran Malwarebytes and it cleared a few PUPs, SFC checks passed, and everything looked good. Unfortunately, the problem still exists. I think I'm in trouble! Lol, this is just so strange—it would be fine one day and then suddenly everything breaks.

I would remove the riser for the card and insert it directly into the motherboard.

Discord causes problems for certain users... initially, install without the PCIe extension and check the RAM, such as using just one stick or two in dual memory channel... regarding latency, this new Ryzen model has made significant progress.

I ran some tests and saw that my GPU clock is stuck at 420mhz and the memory clock at 9501mhz. They should be increasing to nearly 1800mhz. I still need to try removing the PCIe extension—it's a hassle because I have this water loop setup on the vertical card.

I don’t understand what this did if it had any effect or just random luck. I saw some advice suggesting unplugging the power cord and holding the power button for 30 seconds to reset things, so I tried it and now my GPU clock speeds are up to 1950mhz and games run smoother. What’s happening?

I thought the vertical mount GPU issue might stem from the case design handling the MB differently than an adapter setup. If I had known about it, I would have advised against using a vertical mount PCI-e adapter. I strongly advise against any adapters on MBs, particularly for the GPU, due to the high risk of connection issues and latency problems.

I also want to clarify that you mentioned thoroughly testing games beforehand, which didn’t result in this problem. I hadn’t heard it was originally configured that way. So I’m trying to determine if any changes—software or hardware—were made prior to this issue arising. Even switching the PC to a different power outlet wouldn’t have solved it, as those can also cause problems.

I shouldn’t assume parts like the PSU or GPU are completely reliable just because they worked well initially. While most quality products perform consistently, there’s always a small percentage that fails, making it a bit of a gamble. In this case, consumers are essentially left with limited testing options, which is why we’re often the last to know about such issues.

Yeah, it was working perfectly before, which makes this whole situation really odd. For example, I have the Lian Li (who doesn’t) 011 mini with the Lian Li vertical mount that includes a PCIe 4.0 extension, so it can be mounted vertically. It’s just so strange, and it would be helpful to know what’s causing the problem to prevent it in the future. As I mentioned earlier, after unplugging power and holding the button down for a while everything returns to normal, but this has happened before, then suddenly it gets worse again—we’ll see how it unfolds.
