Your Z370 board can handle dual-channel memory, so using four 8GB sticks is feasible. Your motherboard only supports dual channels, but you can still get better performance by pairing sticks in two pairs of dual channels. Using two 16GB sticks would also work well and provide more capacity.

It will work, though using two 16GB drives would be simpler and make it easier to upgrade later to 64GB.

They'll operate on dual channels. Choosing 2x16GB gives you the chance to expand to 64GB later, keeping your existing memory intact.

Dual channel simply indicates two slots available within each channel, unrelated to the total number of slots.

The only situation needing more than two sticks on a dual channel board is when you already possess two and wish to increase total capacity. If you're beginning today, purchase the desired overall capacity in a two-stick setup.

Same bandwidth as 2x16. No future upgrades and increased strain on the imc. Just purchase a 2x16 kit.
