Found: Seeking the classic Prey (2006) PC title.
Valve has stopped offering updates for the game, and my Gamers Gate version is now unusable due to their activation servers ceasing operation. I previously sold my physical disc several years ago because it was accessible through Steam and Gamers Gate at the time. Regrettable, isn't it? If you are aware of a trustworthy vendor offering a working copy, please inform me. I have already searched on eBay.
Seriously, just before I finally managed to get my older laptop running with Windows XP, Steam discontinued support for the platform and removed games.

I understand you’ve looked at eBay, but if you possess a disc drive, you could purchase the game directly on a physical CD. I observe that Kinguin offers keys, although I’m uncertain about their reliability.
I dismissed that particular option previously due to (A) its origin in Eastern Europe and (B) my concern that the key might exhibit a similar problem to mine. However, I could consider trying one of the alternative suggestions. Considering its low price of eight dollars, it’s reasonable to consider a risk. Thank you.
Regarding your problems, I’ve encountered reports concerning activation servers. However, I don’t believe this is relevant to a physical CD release since you do not require downloading the game through a code.
My Gamers Gate installation indicates that the activation server has ceased to function. I reached out to GG, and their response was largely dismissive. Perhaps the original retail version retains an operational activation server, though this is unlikely. It’s probable that it utilizes the identical 2K server currently unavailable through GG, but I'll proceed with this option given the cost. Furthermore, supporting this project benefits a worthwhile organization.
I’m skeptical, but perhaps it's worthwhile to attempt. What reason would necessitate a server connection for a digital duplicate? Is this related to protection measures?
Possibly. That event was significant in 2006. Prior to commencing a game, one needed to enter an access key included with the product.
It’s helpful to understand Steam and older Xbox titles. I recently constructed a vintage gaming computer purely for enjoyment, and I was considering Windows XP versus Windows 7. Ultimately, I selected the latter version.
Yes, this simply results in a “failed to load file.xxx” error. I haven’t been able to find any way around it. I dedicated several months to attempting to establish functionality with XP on my outdated satellite laptop, and driver compatibility proved challenging due to its Ivybridge i5 processor and solid-state drive. The AHCI mode consistently failed to operate correctly. Eventually, I succeeded only to discover that Steam was no longer compatible with XP at that point.
