I favor iCal, Mail, and Contacts over Microsoft Outlook. Having one app works better on my computer, but for iPhone/iPad users it seems the others sync more smoothly. Or maybe you have a different preference, like Thunderbird—though I’m not sure if it’s available on Mac!

I rely on mail thanks to the iCloud connection (my iPhone 4s also means using the same email app on both devices)

I don’t rely on them much; they seem unnecessary to me. I occasionally use Mail, but more often I check my emails on gmail.com.

I really dislike Office on the Mac; it feels heavy and full of irritating details, whereas the Apple apps run smoothly and fit together nicely.

I often rely on Mail, but lately I face an issue on my Mac where I accidentally remove items from my iPhone or iPad, yet they remain on the device that wasn’t deleted first. After clearing out 4,000 emails by combining all three into one client in MS Outlook for Mac 2011, it was frustrating.

We primarily rely on the Apple software for our emails and texts to friends and family on iPad, iPhone, MacBook Pro, and other devices. Since most of my friends and relatives are big Apple users, my usage isn’t likely widespread.

Absolutely correct. Since the same client is used on both devices, iCloud integration was assumed, but it actually does work. You should check the 'Synchronise iCloud' option in the Mailbox section of the top bar. I'm unable to test it right now due to connection issues with the iCloud servers.
