Hey, you're planning to assemble a new PC with the i7-10700k and RTX 3070. You're thinking of upgrading RAM from 3200 to 3600 without going overboard. I recommend a solid, budget-friendly option under $250. Since you won’t be heavily overclocking, sticking to a stable configuration will be best. The Corsair RM 750 is a great choice for reliability and value.

Choose a B560 board without much concern. RAM overclocking works easily on such a chipset. Options like the B560 Steel Legend or B560 Bazooka fit around $150 well. The reason is these boards use power-saving algorithms that reduce heat and energy use. That’s not an advantage. Still, if you already have the 10700kf, make sure you own a compatible motherboard—upgrading isn’t worth it unless the board is severely outdated. The 12th gen offers better performance, and a B660 board with a 12600k would cost similarly while delivering more speed.

Your 8700k stays capped at 5GHz across all cores even when idle, which can cause delays. The low idle times you see (7w and 25-30c) might be due to background processes or thermal throttling.

They suggested checking out the 12700kf and Z690A-Pro, and I think I’ll go with that. Right now I don’t have the 10700kf.

That's a harsh opinion! 😅 Let me know if you'd like to discuss it further.

Great options available. Building today would yield similar results. Think about the 12700 non-K and a solid B660. With PL2 power unlock, performance should match the 12700K unless you make changes.

The DDR4 model is the standard version. DDR5 behaves almost identically except in a few cases. I tested the board (DDR4 variant) with the chip (non-F variant due to cost savings) and it delivers strong performance for its price. For budget-conscious buyers, the 12600k(f) remains a solid choice, surpassing the 10700KF in both single-threaded and multithreaded workloads.

Yes, you can use DDR4 memory with a 12th generation processor.

I've created a 12th generation DDR4 setup that functions perfectly. https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16813144488...ption=z690 a ddr4&cm_re=z690_a ddr4-_-13-144-488-_-Product&quicklink=true Just keep in mind, steer clear of Gigabyte boards for 12th gen DDR4—they've messed up their layout, making higher speeds tricky.
