I have an I5-8500 that isn’t in use, and I’m planning to upgrade my kids’ PC. The current machine is a Dell Optiplex 990, which isn’t great but was free. I’m aiming for something better than the cheapest motherboard but not the most expensive either, since I’m the only one who uses it right now. I’ve considered the MSI Z390A-pro, which I’ve used before, but it’s near my budget limit. *I already have everything else for this build—M.2, GPU, PSU, etc.*

I wouldn't recommend a Z series motherboard. The CPU is fixed, and memory speed won't noticeably affect performance. A Asus Prime B365M-A or an ASRock B365M Pro 4 would be a better option, both falling in the 70-80$ range.
