Finally getting around to trying it out. I own an i5 6600k at stock and a giggybites windforce 3 OC 980ti, with 16gb ddr4 and plenty of room on the psu since it's running on an 850w Corsair Gold (still solid).
Running the benchmark tool at high 1080p gives averages around 55fps, minimum 22fps. On medium it's about 65fps, minimum 25fps. In-game performance is roughly 50-60fps, with occasional drops to 30fps and some stuttering, though not too severe—something I've experienced in larger games lately.
1) Anyone else with these specs sees similar results?
2) What would an OC to 4Ghz make a difference? I know it can boost up to around 3.9Ghz, but I feel like I'm still limited by big games (noticed this mainly on AC Origins and Odyssey).
When viewing at 1080p, these frame rates are quite low. I managed to play the game at 50-60FPS with a GTX 1080 and a Ryzen 7 2700 at 3440x1440 resolution. This strongly suggests a CPU bottleneck. Increasing the CPU clock to at least 4.4Ghz should resolve the problem. You should also be able to run smoothly at 4.2 or 4.3Ghz without needing higher voltage.
i've always thought i should have higher fps in games, even on medium or high settings, but i'm sure i'll try to optimize tomorrow when i can check the results.
The bench feels significantly tougher compared to the game. I adjusted the settings using this scene.
I believe a medium 60 FPS is suitable given the game, your CPU is 4/4ct which is a major limitation in open world as it is, but even with a 9900k 5ghz I think you'd likely average no more than 70fps. 980ti can handle a fair amount. I got +300mhz on core on mine for 1480mhz.
