What stress tests have you carried out to confirm its stability? Up to now, I haven’t pushed it under heavy load with tools like Prime95; I mainly use the Eurotruck Simulator for about 20 minutes each session, never exceeding an hour, and so far everything has worked fine.
Turning off just the cores only reduces your CPU performance, it's better to keep them all active. Your clock speed considers all six cores; removing two means losing a third of your processing power, while the remaining cores won't perform better than if they were enabled. This might work for older games, but newer titles (especially after GTA 4) will gain or lose depending on whether the extra cores are on or off. Running a CPU-Z benchmark should show over 6000 points for multi-threading and around 1200 for single-threading at your current speeds.
Even more problematic, turning off cores doesn't reduce TDP or significantly cut power needs, which doesn't aid optimization either. The system continues to operate through every core, just not utilizing them for processing.
