For an upgrade, you should consider a Witch CPU.
Last year I assembled a PC for light video editing in Premiere Pro. I purchased these components: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 (6 cores, 12 threads), Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB at 3200MHz RAM (though it didn’t run at full speed, I removed two sticks and set them to XMP 3200), and an ASUS ROG Strix 2060 OC motherboard (which I got a discount on, around 600€ to just over 400€ plus a free game). My question is, which CPU should I upgrade to? I’m considering the Ryzen 9 3950X or 3900X. I want to replace the two RAM sticks and run at full 3200MHz. Money isn’t a problem. I could go with the 3950X. Just thinking that the parts above would work well. Thanks!
If price is not an issue, the 3950x is a hell of a chip. But that said, I would be a little worried about the VRM on your motherboard. According to this, it should be ok if you don't overclock at all. I would watch the VRM temps though, and you don't want the VRM failing. I just had a VRM fail on my mobo and it took my 8700k out with it, and I had a hell of an 8700k, lowest volts I have EVER seen for 5 GHz :/. Just something to think about. Focus solely on the 32GB of 3200 MHz RAM and consider trading in your 4x8GB package for a 2x16GB option running at the same speed. For light video editing, weigh whether a CPU upgrade is justified at this point. You also have the choice to wait until the fourth generation or opt for the third generation for better deals then. Upgrading your motherboard might be necessary for the 3950X, though its strong VRM should handle overclocking; otherwise, you may need another upgrade for stability.
Check your motherboard compatibility and upgrade options. For the first setup, pairing the Ryzen 9 3900X with MSI Tomahawk and Corsair LXVEN Vengeance 32GB at 3200MHz should work. With the ASUS ROG Strix X570-F and the same RAM, it can reach full 3200MHz if supported.
