Hello everyone, I'm considering a CPU upgrade to boost my gaming experience. Right now I have an i7-6700K with a 1080p graphics card. I'm curious about the actual performance boost from switching to a higher-end CPU and what model would be ideal for 4K gaming. I'm also thinking about replacing the 1080 Ti with the upcoming 3080 Ti when it becomes available. Thanks!

It seems it varies based on the type of games you play. Your system should handle 4K smoothly—your i7-6900K and GTX1080 should work well, especially with 4K gaming and VR.

GPU performance is significantly better at 4K resolution. A 3300x display works well. Keep using the 6700k until the fourth-gen Ryzen models.

If you're patient for a 3080Ti, you're also likely to wait for better CPUs. The 6700k remains a solid choice and still performs well in many games when boosted. I wish I hadn't sold it—its performance was impressive, even at 4.9Ghz.

For gaming, an Intel CPU is a good choice since it boosts frame rates.

Likely insufficient to warrant the upgrade. My setup includes an i7-4770 and a GTX 1080 (no-Ti), and most 4K games run at 50fps, so a Ti should easily reach 60fps. For pushing to 60fps, you’d need to wait for a 3080Ti. The CPU change won’t significantly boost that frame rate.

It might not make much difference, since you haven’t overclocked before. The i7 6700K is already powerful, so further tweaks probably won’t boost performance noticeably.

I'm being straightforward—4K gaming isn't the best experience. Frame rates usually drop unless you have a powerful GPU, which is rare. I wouldn't suggest it. Right now it's more about hardware limitations, and it won't get better soon.

Maybe adding some challenges would be useful. Even if you're not pushing your CPU to its limit in a particular game, it still doesn't make much difference.
