I have an external hard drive that I rely on often for music playback. The issue arises when I don’t listen for about 30 minutes—then it takes roughly 30 seconds for the drive to restart, which is frustrating. In Windows 7 there was a setting to keep the drive spinning continuously during boot; I’m not sure if this feature exists in Windows 10. Searching online hasn’t helped much, as it seems people are linking me to setups with consoles like the PS4 or Xbox One instead. Sometimes I just dislike Google for its results.

Absolutely, I shared it around the same time to take the spotlight.

Access the old control panel, navigate to Power settings, proceed to change power plan, then move to advanced settings and configure the drives to never spin down. This adjustment might reduce the lifespan of your drives since it prevents any spinning down from occurring.

I saved a program that writes about a kilobyte of data to the disk every eight minutes so it stays active and never shuts down. It's hard to say if this is better for the device's health than having it restart each time you need it, but I won't have to wait 30 seconds more to play music.

Hard drives function mechanically, with motors and bearings inside. Each time they start up, the bearings experience some wear. The more frequently they operate, the faster they degrade.

Absolutely, doing that repeatedly isn't ideal either...

That's correct. With an SSD, you could store your music there. This would reduce the need to use the HDD frequently.
