I'm considering enhancing my graphics card to fully utilize my new 1440p/144Hz display. I'm concerned about potential bottlenecks, especially since my CPU is an i5-4670K. My current setup includes a Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H motherboard, 32GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600 RAM, and a MSI RX 480 PSU. The monitor I have is an Asus MG279Q ROG Dominator 27" at 1440p with 144Hz.
I'm thinking about upgrading to either a GTX 2070 Super or a GTX 2080 Super. My plan involves using Cinema 4D, Octane Render (once I get a new card), Rhino, Maxwell Render, and other software. If I upgrade the CPU, it might require a motherboard and possibly more RAM, which could limit my ability to afford a top-tier GPU for the monitor.
I'd appreciate your advice on whether a 2080 Super or 2070 Super would fit well with my current build, or if there are better ways to improve performance without overhauling everything at once.
Bottlenecks arise from how a machine operates, not from its individual components. You’re limited only by the part that’s used most frequently. Removing a bottleneck often means adjusting how you load the system, though... A 2080 can be a good choice even if your CPU is slow—just plan for upgrades later. The GPU might eventually move to another machine, so it makes sense to consider it if you have the budget.
It seems your setup is quite outdated. To get the most from your GPU, consider upgrading to a newer hardware model. If budget is a concern, look for a more recent CPU from your current generation (like Core i7-4770K or 4790K). It may not provide a significant performance jump, but it will improve your overall experience. You can also choose a used one temporarily (much cheaper) until you can afford a full upgrade.
It could slow down a ~2080 level card, mainly in recent games where more than four threads are required. Battlefiled V would easily consume ten threads, whereas Rocket League seems fine on a dual-core setup. As @Chiyawa mentioned, using a compatible market processor is beneficial—opt for a 4th generation i7 and upgrade the existing hardware (assuming cooling works). Hyperthreading will make a noticeable difference, possibly extending your system's lifespan by another couple of years. In the UK, CeX lists 4770k units for around £115, which should be affordable even if you look at private sellers. Selling your i5 could also recoup half its value.
