Good morning. I am having a hard time trying to make my system go faster by overclocking. My motherboard is an AS Rock B450 Steel Legend, but my BIOS version is P3.40. My CPU is AMD Ryzen 7 2700x with eight cores, and my graphics card is a GeForce GTX 1660 super. I also have a solid 32GB of DDR4 memory running at 2800MHz on 64GB of RAM, along with Windows 10 Pro 64-bit.

I tried using the AS Rock utility to overclock it, and I also tried tuning through the BIOS settings by going from the base speed of 3700 MHz up to 4000 MHz. The computer is not starting at all now. What is the maximum speed I can get for this setup? And how should I do this correctly?

4.6GHz is basically impossible. Most Ryzen CPUs rely on automatic boost for all their cores, so there isn't really a limit to how high one core can go. To check this yourself for homework: Turn auto-boost and PBO all the way up. While running CineBench r20 three times in a row, watch what frequency your CPU hits at that moment. Write down that number and voltage. Then go into BIOS and change both the CPU multiplier and power supply to be 100MHz lower than the peak you just found. Run the test again and see if you get better results. Often, the highest clock speed isn't actually the best performance; temperature, power delivery, and other factors matter more too.

Is this about both CPU and RAM? I raised them earlier, just by making a few small tweaks to the power settings. Thanks!

To boost a CPU speed without changing its default settings, just make sure your RAM isn't set to anything unusual. If you want to push your CPU faster than it's supposed to go, only change those settings if you know what you're doing with the RAM. The power coming in from the electricity (voltage) for the processor and the speed of the memory stick don't talk to each other.

Every system works differently, so just putting in one setting that fits everyone isn't enough. I suggest you check out Google's overclocking guides for your CPU and motherboard. Many people have shared their thoughts on what's safe here; read a few opinions to see if they match yours. Comparing the advice lets you decide which guide feels right for you. A really good guide is much larger than just one post I make in this spot.

Try again later. You'll find out which settings give the best performance. Just remember, going for the highest OC doesn't always mean better results; heat and power delivery also matter a lot. With an OEM cooler, you're likely stuck at 4 to 4.1GHz all-core OC while keeping temperatures comfortable (around 80 to 85 degrees Celsius). For auto-boost, you'll have to keep the temperature under control to stay below 62 to 65 degrees Celsius maximum.

Morning, thanks for getting back to me. I just ran three tests with PBO and Cinebench. Here is what happened: Test 1 was 4.1 mhz points with 3969 score. Test 2 was also 4.1 mhz points but with a score of 3980. Test 3 was again 4.1 mhz points, this time with a score of 3984. While I was running the tests, most of the time my speed was around 3.950 mhz. My voltage was highest at 15125 when it peaked at 4.1 mhz, but usually it stayed around 1.3375 volts. So should I take the highest number which is 4.1, or the one that ran most of the time which was 3.950? My memory stayed at 1067, but according to the software it can go up to 3200. Is that okay?
