First time using Acer Aspire E5-551 with a new SSD and Windows 8.1 setup
I’m trying to resolve some issues with my Aspire E5-551. I purchased it used on Amazon and initially ran a fresh Windows 8.1 installation. Everything seemed normal until I noticed slow performance due to the hard drive. I swapped it with a new SSD that worked well on another system. After installing Windows 8.1 via USB, the setup would prompt a restart, but it kept freezing during startup or loading. I waited hours, even letting the spinning disk spin, before forcing a restart through the power button. Eventually, I had to reset the laptop using the power button.
When the error message appeared—“The Computer Restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error”—I was advised to restart again. This repeated cycle happened no matter how many times I tried. Unlike other computers I’ve used with Windows 8.1, this one kept showing the same issue.
While the error screen was on, I opened Command Prompt (via Shift+F10) and ran regedit. The fix involved navigating to HKLocal machine/SYSTEM/SETUP/STATUS/ChildCompletion and changing the setup.exe path to 3. After doing this, I experienced blank screens during restarts but eventually returned to my desktop after a couple reboots.
The desktop appeared functional, though it lacked some apps and features that come with a fresh Windows install. For example, Internet Explorer wasn’t even in the start menu. It seems like a partial installation or incomplete setup. I’m frustrated because everything seemed fine until drivers were installed, after which the machine stopped responding to clicks but the mouse continued moving. Rebooting it this way would just show “getting ready,” and I’m not sure how to fix that.
I’m exhausted from dealing with this problem and would really appreciate any advice or guidance you can provide.
