First-Time PC Build: Need Advice
Starting PC setup: seeking guidance on CPU and motherboard for gaming and resale! This is my initial build, with these components already chosen: Gigabyte WINDFORCE SFF GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16GB GPU (not yet bought), Noctua NH-D15 82.5 CFM CPU cooler (available), Samsung 990 Pro 2TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSD (available), SeaSonic Focus GX V4 ATX 3.0 (2024) 1000W, 80+ Gold certified fully modular ATX power supply (available). Right now I’m not sure which CPU and motherboard to pick. My main goal is gaming, especially single-player titles. I aim for the system to remain functional and valuable for 5 to 10 years, with some upgrades later, and I want the CPU, GPU, and motherboard to retain their worth when selling. Here are the prices for bundles in my region: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D + Gigabyte B850 AORUS ELITE WIFI7 – $498 USD, AMD Ryzen 7 9700X + Gigabyte B850 AORUS ELITE WIFI7 – $438 USD, Intel Core Ultra 7 265K + Gigabyte Z890 GAMING X WIFI7 – $456 USD. Could you suggest a suitable CPU and motherboard combination for my situation?

Looking at their current setup, you probably won’t see much improvement in the future, which might lead to disappointment if you plan to upgrade later. AMD is gaining popularity among gamers, so it could also affect resale value. Between the 9700x and 7800x3d, both are solid options. The latter tends to perform better in games, though it really depends on the title and resolution. If you're on a budget, go with the 9700x. AMD has committed to supporting the AM5 platform for a while longer, so you might be able to upgrade it in a couple of years. Just a quick note: the 7800x3d might fetch a bit more later due to its wider recognition.
No one can predict with confidence what will happen five to ten years from now. Prices might change a lot. When the 7800X3D was popular, would it still be valuable in five years versus a newer model? I’d choose the 7800X3D package since I’ve used it, and the 7700X is quite similar to the 9700X. The performance tends to be stronger on an X3D chip for most games.
Welcome to the discussions! *Joined in 2019 when the 3000 and 5000 lines dominated Intel builds today. You’ll find that most modern systems from a decade ago are worth almost nothing in ten years. I recently sold an 8700K with a GPU for under $100. That was a brand new $1200 build. The truth is, technology keeps getting cheaper. Even five years from now I wouldn’t expect much more than a 30% drop in value compared to today. Still, if you set up an AM5 now, you should be able to upgrade to the latest models or even two generations later.*
Comparing the 7800X3D and 9700X for multitasking is interesting. I’m using a 1440p display and curious about how these two perform side by side, especially with background music and a guide open while gaming. It’s pretty cool how they handle different tasks!
AM5 is the best choice right now. Technology keeps evolving, and most people have already shifted to the latest options.
