Hey everyone, just wanted to check in. I'm planning to build a system using a Ryzen 7 1700 X and have a few questions. Does the first Ryzen model I picked have any known issues or quirks that still exist today? Should I be concerned about anything? Thanks!
Except for memory controllers that struggle with high-speed kits or multiple sticks, yes.
Early Ryzen models faced significant issues with memory controllers, often limiting speeds to around 3000 MHz unless voltage adjustments were made.
Using my 1600 with 2400MHz RAM and four 4GB modules. I didn’t plan to overclock just for a normal setup, so keeping things even should work well.
It doesn't perform quickly and there are no crashes occurring.
I purchased an R7 1700 roughly a month after its release, and it worked well for me over the two years I used it. The biggest issue was with the motherboard, but problems were resolved through BIOS updates. I still suggest opting for a B450/X470 board if you choose that CPU, as it allows future upgrades to Ryzen 5000 depending on the platform, and these boards are significantly improved over the original X370/B350 models with better BIOS support. Except for that, the memory controller wasn't exceptional, but I managed to run 3200MHz with XMP on a non-Ryzen setup, which means it's not as bad as some people claim.
High voltages to obtain a OC and the head room for a OC is limited. I reached 4ghz @ 1.42v. Not sure about the ram issue everything is talking about. Had 3 different 1700s on 3 diff mobos and hit 3200 no prob with every set I had. Also OC'd ram to 3466 on a b450 board. If you can find a 2700 for a similar price then snag that.
It could be limited by Windows 11 due to TPM and certain virtualization or memory protection commands that the 1xxx models might lack or perform worse than 2xxx and newer versions. Things to watch: some boards now support only 2xxx and above, so you’d need a 2xxx processor to update an older BIOS for 1xxx compatibility—unless your board includes a BIOS flashback capability. Check the official BIOS downloads and notes for updates; some systems are more sensitive to memory frequencies and chip types. Early models often require 3200 MHz with some sticks, while others work at 3000 or 2933 MHz. Using more than two sticks might push you down to 2933 or 2600 MHz. The Samsung memory chips were generally the most compatible, though I’m not certain. Updates via AGESA have helped a bit, but 2xxx and newer still benefit from better memory controllers. If you haven’t purchased an 1700 yet, consider the 1600 AF version, which is very close to a Ryzen 2600, or the genuine Ryzen 2600.
