I need to buy TV shows because they are good for me, but I am worried that physical discs won't work on my computer in the future. I also want to watch them easily 30 years from now without having to buy new copies every time (maybe even if the technology no longer exists). To solve this problem, I should probably just download files instead of buying discs. However, regular streaming services feel risky because companies might shut down or disappear long before my life ends, and losing access could mean I can't see my old shows anymore. Also, a streaming service needs an internet connection to work at all, so if that goes out later in life, it would break too. So what is the right answer here? Is there a place where I can buy movie files or software that stays on my computer even if the machine dies, and keeps playing the shows for me forever?

Grab the Blu-rays if they're available. Copy them to your hard drive as backup or just because it feels easier. If Linux won't read them, turn them into a format that works with Linux instead.

Grab your blu rays if they are available. Copy them onto a hard drive just in case and so it's easier later. If your computer says no, you can still make the file work by turning it into a different type of video file that computers like to run.

Lots are available. Some might not be fully legal. Search around. You only need a few special words to find them.
