Only vehicles purchased online offer savings. If you could take any car and keep it, it would undermine the reason for buying them...

You cannot keep stolen aircraft, only if you acquire them. In Trevor's hangar, only certain planes are allowed.

You're free to keep any vehicle you take, whether it's in your own workshop or at the character's residence or safe house... I've taken Lazer jets and kept them in Trevor's hangar without any problems (at least during story mode, though the original never mentioned anything online).

I just placed them in the garage, took a short drive a quarter of a mile, and then applied quick save on my phone.

For vehicles, you can take any car, insure it, store it in your garage, and claim ownership permanently—just contact the insurance company via phone. However, you can't steal or keep supercars. For planes, choppers, military gear, purchase online.
