Find ways to work around the port forwarding limit.
I've managed gaming servers for several years, usually running a handful at a time with a few ports forwarded. Recently, I dedicated myself to hosting multiple video games on a Dell PowerEdge, now running 12 servers. Some need just one port, others require four or more. My router, an Asus RT-N65R, has a 32-port limit, which is the main constraint. Though I have ample RAM and processing power, I can't exceed this number. I'm considering switching to a router that supports RMerlin firmware for higher port limits, or perhaps investing in a server-optimized router altogether. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Switch to a high-end enterprise router instead of the outdated model. There are many custom firewall and router ISO options available. If you're comfortable with PowerEdge servers, I usually use an R410 as a firewall/router because it's affordable and supports dual sockets and AES-NI.
