I'm looking for the best possible input latency. I enjoy rhythm games and currently experience around 42ms, which bothers me. My setup includes an ASUS VP228 at 74Hz, a 6600k, and an RX460. The games run smoothly at about 1000 FPS with only 0.3ms of game latency. However, when I click on the beat and hear the sound effect, it lags by 42ms—this timing is noticeable. Even halving that would make a big difference. Can we improve this further?

They're focusing on the speed without considering the real-world impact. It seems the developers didn't aim for the absolute fastest possible keyboard. The 42ms you mention is impressive, but it's just a placebo effect. What matters more is whether it meets your needs, not how fast it is.

It's definitely achievable to detect a 1/25th of a second change by tapping and having the audio appear in the game.

You've noticed a clear contrast between old CRT TVs and modern flat panels. The difference is quite apparent—especially when comparing smooth analog input with the smoother, more consistent performance of flat screens.

It seems the issue might lie with the monitors themselves. For gaming, you'd want a high-refresh-rate display with minimal input lag—ideally a modern OLED or IPS panel with low-ping technology. If you're open to alternatives to CRTs, look for models with 60Hz+ refresh rates and excellent color accuracy.

I didn't make that statement. I'm not sure what's affecting your setup—maybe you could explain how you're certain it's precisely 42 ms? Edit: My search shows your monitor was tested at roughly 10 ms, which is normal for a screen and shouldn't cause problems. Something else likely needs to be slowing things down.

The only solution to reduce latency is to boost your refresh rate. 75hz works better than 60hz, and 144hz without any ghosting is significantly superior to both.

I mainly use osu, and I understand the 42ms lag comes from a latency offset button. There’s an option to disable effects, which I did, but I noticed my notes weren’t scoring fully. I kept playing until my average stayed consistent (like -6ms to +6ms). Right now I’m at 42ms latency, and I can see the notes fade slightly before they fully close in the game. I’d like to lower the latency further by tweaking the settings.

I’m aiming for a higher-quality display since I plan to purchase one soon once I have the funds.

Is it a rhythm game? That’s dancing to another dancer on TV to win the game or similar to Guitar Hero? Whatever you do, check your monitor for no ghosting issues—use Lightboost or enable freesync. Also, when playing online, stick to LAN instead of Wi-Fi.
