I put the Raspberry Pi Desktop on an external SSD but it doesn’t start. It displays “Welcome to…” then crashes. I have Debian and Windows 10 available in the boot options. The live USB works fine.

Here are the recommended drivers for both 32-bit and 64-bit systems. Successfully installing a GPU while keeping your Pi functional and ready for future tasks is definitely achievable.

It would be easier if you clarified your goal. A Raspberry Pi doesn't have a PCI-E slot for a graphics card.
