I attempted to fix my laptop's battery issue on my own. I gathered the serial number and explored resources from the Thinkpad community and YouTube tutorials. I located manuals and found relevant videos for a T480 ThinkPad, which helped me understand the process. I identified the correct battery types (01AV427 external and 01AV493 internal) and ordered replacements from Encompass Lenovo Parts, as iFixit didn’t have the internal ones. The parts arrived by mail, and I followed instructions carefully.

During the replacement, I noticed some unusual tape covering certain components. The laptop would power on only when plugged in and shut down when removed. I documented everything with screenshots and photos. Before doing so, I updated my system and reinstalled drivers, trying to mix old and new batteries to see if it improved performance.

I experimented by leaving the charger on for a couple of hours while researching, but avoided keeping the new batteries overnight. I also tried charging them at full capacity, though this was risky. My current usage is limited—just browsing or playing games like Old School Runescape—which drains the battery quickly. I sometimes use Firefox to reduce resource consumption, as Chrome uses more CPU and memory.

I considered backing up my data and planning a fresh install later, hoping it would resolve the problem. The experience was frustrating because I expected DIY fixes to be straightforward, especially given how long I’d owned this machine. Despite the challenges, I’m hopeful that adjusting settings or trying different charging habits might help restore functionality.
