Despite having a gigabit plan, a gigabit TP connection, and a gigabit Ethernet cable, my speeds remain low—around 200MB/s when playing Xbox and likely under 100MB/s on my PC. This doesn’t make sense and has always puzzled me.

Hello! I'm here to understand your router setup. Do you have a direct connection between the router and your computer, or is there an intermediary device such as a switch? If it's a switch, what brand do you have? Have you experimented with another cable?

Ensure your TP Link router supports gigabit ports. Older models might have one 1 Gbps RJ45 port for incoming traffic and 100 mbps for outgoing connections. Your download speed on Xbox will likely vary based on the data center you're using, and whether the game is compressed or not affects performance.

You own a virgin media 1 GB plan and a 1 GB TPP connection accessed via a wall outlet. There’s also a plug connected to the internet and another with an Ethernet cable attached to your PC.

1 gbps equals 1 gigabit each second, which is 1 billion bits per second. Since there are 8 bits in one byte, you split that value by 8 to arrive at 125 billion bytes per second. There are 1 million bytes in a megabyte, so dividing by one million gives approximately 125 megabytes per second. This represents the upper limit of theoretical speed, showing how many bits can travel through the cable and be processed by the network card. The information travels in packets, each with extra data like headers—similar to sending pages instead of a complete book. In practice, only about 122 to 123 MB/s is actually usable for writing files to disk.

I was completely fooled, thinking I'd get at least 300mb/s on a gigabit plan. It's really disappointing.
