You're able to run Windows 10 without a license, but some features won't work and you'll see a watermark on your screen.
It functions perfectly with no issues, though a watermark appears in the corner and the desktop background cannot be altered.
Windows 10 largely eliminated most notification screens except for the "unactivated copy" watermark on your desktop. In practice, running an unactivated version isn't wrong as long as you don’t install software that hides these alerts. Over the long term, I’ve kept an unactivated Windows 10 instance in a virtual machine for a few months, and it barely bothers me beyond the watermark. It’s similar to the old trial versions, except instead of a time limit, it’s just the watermark.
Remaining a visible watermark on your clean background still exists... consider purchasing the $80 key for a better solution.
But that’s where things blur into the gray area. You’re not meant to bypass the restrictions imposed by being inactive. There’s a subtle boundary between switching your background and removing watermarks altogether.
Only the desktop background is restricted, and the watermark is visible.
You have the ability to modify the background and a few other aspects. But these changes aren’t available in the system controls. I’ve observed that occasionally the watermark disappears briefly, allowing Windows to reset its memory of the purchase. While you’re free to adjust all the visual options during that time.
