I just discovered converting MKV to HEVC. It's resource-intensive for playback but can significantly reduce file size without affecting quality. My quick searches found some tools, though a few seemed questionable. Any advice would be appreciated.

Mkv functions as a container, not a codec; your video might already be in hevc/h.265 format. You could achieve significant compression without noticeably affecting image quality. I’ll try using Handbrake with the Shutter Encoder and check if the space savings are beneficial for you.

Starting the test conversion now. I watched a tutorial and got right in. I’m checking how it goes. Not sure if I’m doing it right—just chose the highest 1080p option. It seems to be converting to m4v instead of mp4, which is taking about the movie’s duration. I’ll have to wait a bit.

We seem to be onto something here. I just ran a test on Zoolander—Blu-ray size is now 26.8GB. After converting from MKV using HandBreak (recommended by Electronics Wizardy), the file dropped to 6.52GB with no noticeable quality drop. That really fixed my problem, honestly.

I've noticed file compression significantly improves log files.

I'm using HandBreak to change MKV files into M4V format. It's been working nonstop for over two weeks, and I've only used about half of my 12TB drive so far. So far, it's saved roughly 5TB of space.

What are your preferences? I haven't found success with HandBrake... I'm using Shutter Encoder now, though I still notice some artifacts or blur. It's significantly better for me and much quicker. Just a question.

I mostly left everything at the default level except for the quality, which is set to the highest (very slow). No issues have been noticed yet. I got confused by the audio settings and HB choosing a foreign language option, so I had to redo those files. HB is taking a long time, but I’m saving about 3/4 of the space each raw mkv occupies, which is good. I haven’t heard of or used shutter before.
