Find a CPU under $300 with good performance and enough memory for your needs.
He’s been using the same old AM3 for years, mainly for work and light gaming. He’s not interested in a new CPU, but he needs a better CPU, some more RAM, and probably an upgraded cooler. The idea is to switch to something like Ryzen 3 3200G with a B550 and 16GB of fast memory. Using slower RAM speeds like 2400 won’t hurt much, so it should help without breaking the bank. Since he’s still using a GTX 950Ti, the GPU won’t be the main bottleneck. He doesn’t need top-end rendering performance, just reliability. If you want more budget savings, focus on the CPU upgrade and cooling. Prices in Thailand might be different, and he prefers new parts over used ones.
I would choose an i5 10500 or 10600 with a temperature coefficient around 150-200 F/K, based on what you can afford. Go with a budget-friendly H410 or H510 motherboard and pair it with a basic 2x8GB RAM kit.
Memory frequency plays a role in Ryzen processors. At least opt for 3000 Mhz RAM sticks. You might notice a slight improvement of around 0.5-1% with 3200 Mhz in certain tasks. A boost from 3200 to 3600 is still present, though less obvious. You could consider an older B450 motherboard paired with a used Ryzen 2600/3600 or higher model, since it already includes a graphics card. Don’t stress too much about future upgrades; he’s likely moving to AM5 socket and DDR5 memory plus USB 4, or sticking with Intel options. There’s a US seller offering a Ryzen 2600 for $140: https://www.ebay.com/itm/165218686159 Another has one without a CPU cooler for $142: https://www.ebay.com/itm/393475505001 Current processor prices aren’t great, but the best option seems to be a 5600G at $230: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/sYmmP6/...0000252box). This would require a B520 or B550 motherboard, pushing your budget over $300. A good setup for the 5600G could be:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G (3.9 GHz, 6 cores) – $239 at Newegg
- Board: Gigabyte A520M S2H Micro ATX AM4 – $62.99 on Amazon
- RAM: 16 GB DDR4-3600 CL18 (2 x 8 GB) – $49.50 at Newegg
Total comes to about $351.49
Thanks for the feedback! It’s clear this friend is in Thailand, so buying from eBay isn’t practical—the shipping would be too expensive. Also, he prefers new items over second-hand. Still appreciate the advice, and I’ll keep an eye out for more options before deciding.
Thanks for the feedback! I'll remember it for future decisions.
