I used to think turn-based strategy games were dull, slow, and just for geeks, but after playing many JRPGs I really started to like them. Especially after the Persona series, I haven’t played all of them because I only have a PlayStation version and no 3DS. I’m curious—will the upcoming Final Fantasy be turn-based or more like an MMO RPG? And will it be available on PC next?

Final Fantasy 14 is a multiplayer online role-playing game. Visit the official site at http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/ For Final Fantasy 15 check http://finalfantasyxv.com/. Begin exploring via the provided link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_XV. The game's combat method, known as the Active Cross Battle system, mirrors the mechanics from Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy Type-0.[11] Instead of navigating through menus, players choose actions directly linked to controller buttons like "Attack", "Magic", "Technique", and "Item", along with jumps. When a button is pressed, the character executes the corresponding action. Success hinges on consistent, flexible execution through taps and button holds.[11][12] This approach differs from earlier entries, as battle sequences blend naturally into surroundings without pauses or transitions.[11] As you face foes, a progress bar shows if you flee too late; failure prompts pursuit by the enemy. A contextual cover system lets allies hide from attacks and restore health, or initiate tasks with particular arms. The main hero, Noctis, is the only player-controlled figure, though other members can join freely at certain story moments.[9][11] Unlike prior titles, characters move freely within pre-set roles while the player assigns specific tasks. During fights, a menu appears for quick adjustments to character behavior and Noctis's commands.[15] Players can also switch positions swiftly with allies. Helpful actions from teammates, such as healing, activate automatically.[4] Noctis can team up with others to execute combo attacks once a target is identified. Parrying and blocking are possible but consume magic points (MP), and Noctis cannot auto-parry—each block must match the opponent's strike.[5][7][11] He can issue commands to other characters as well. Weapons are stored in a deck curated by the player, changing with each battle based on the situation.[11][14] They include swords, axes, lances, and guns, offering varied attacks and customization options.[10][16] Each weapon has ranks like "Crush", "Ravage", and "Counter": Crush weapons open fights, while Ravage weapons support sustained assaults.[5] The chosen weapon appears on screen and can be swapped freely. One weapon defaults for Noctis, with special moves unlockable.[14] "Phantom Weapons" are collectible; using them drains MP until replenished, aiding prolonged combat. Major spells like Fire impact targets and nearby areas, potentially harming allies or intimidating foes.[5] Noctis can warp between locations, with range limited by his level.[17] He can also steal mechas and tanks from enemies for tactical use.[18] Summoned creatures, known as Archaeans (e.g., Ramuh, Leviathan, Titan), appear in battle. They follow a ranking system, with titans like Leviathan being top-tier.[9][17] Before joining the party, these monsters must be defeated or acquired elsewhere.[9]

FF has been lagging since X-2. Stick with the classic FF titles or grab a 3DS and try Bravely Default.

The upcoming FF, FFXV isn’t turn-based. I’ve tried the demo on PS4—it wasn’t too bad, honestly. I’d have liked a more traditional combat experience, but they’ve managed it well. It does take some time to get used to, but once you adapt, fighting becomes much more flexible.

If anything Bravely Default is pretty good. However it gets bloody tedious and difficult if you don't constantly level up. I haven't even touched my 2DS anymore because I didn't want to deal with grinding for hours on hours even with everything on max. I can't find any real place to level up fast. That is why I didn't even attempt at finishing. I liked FFX-2 gameplay it forced you quickly think and make fast decisions.
