You noticed that the file explorer and desktop images vanished after restarting your computer. This occurred because a game (Star Citizen) you were updating stopped mid-process, preventing it from finishing. You searched online for solutions but didn’t find any similar results, so you were looking for assistance.

Navigate to the path "C:\Users\ <username> \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer" in the command prompt. Launch Task Manager and end Windows Explorer. Once done, all explorer windows and your desktop will vanish. Enter "del iconcache*" in the command prompt and restart the computer to resolve the issue.

I've encountered similar problems with a virus on a client's computer before. You might want to try updating your operating system, though that usually requires reinstalling everything. There was also a registry file that got deleted, which initially led to the issues.

I'm not sure about the specific virus or file, but a scan should identify it. To fix a corrupted registry file, you might need specialized tools or a system restore.

I’ll attempt to update my system tomorrow—it should be simple and might resolve the issue. Unless there’s another method to address it.

These programs focus solely on scanning and eliminating existing malware, they don’t fix Windows files or registry changes. You use them for protection, ensuring threats aren’t active before they run or block them. Create a fresh login and check if the icons appear there.

I checked whether a virus scanner would detect the problem as a malware, not just hoping it fixed it. I usually use a safe browsing mode and tools like Avg, so I wasn’t sure if that was the real issue.
