File Sharing Issues

For a long time I've been sending files through our home network. My main system is the one everyone uses to download files from...my side. I can reach files on one computer even when a VPN is active across the hall, but another machine downstairs can't see just my files and itself. I spent about an hour and a half trying different file-sharing settings last night, but still couldn't solve it. Even though the firewall isn’t blocking anything, the VPN is on and I’ve tested without it. Sharing works fine for me, but when I try to open files, I get this error: "Windows can't access \\PCNAME You do not have permission." It seems someone else on the network has taken control. Since I switched from Intel to Ryzen, the issue appears to be there. My system is still running Intel, while my sister’s is Ryzen and she has no problems accessing shared files. Anyone know how to fix this? I’m running out of ideas. Also, all connections are wired/Ethernet.

Hardware isn't involved here. It would come down to permissions. Are you using Windows 10 Home or Pro? Did you share the HDD via the Sharing settings under HDD properties? Do you log in using her username and password?

I wasn't expecting this. Double-checking everything. Windows 10 Pro on all three systems. I'm using folders from three different HDDs. In properties, I don't have the whole drive shared. It's just unclear why one PC connects while others don't.

Did you need to sign in as a specific user, or was it set up to let all other users access full permissions? It seems Windows restricts remote sessions per account, but I can’t confirm the exact settings. Centralized storage simplifies managing such configurations.

I attempted it initially but the folders appear yet I can’t reach them. After logging in with my username and password, the issue persists. The device that connects never works either. If this happens each time I try opening the shared desktop or TV shows folder, I receive the same error message. It seems the system restricts access even when using my personal PC (PC2).

I can't provide images directly. However, I can describe how to locate them or suggest ways to view them. You can check the Security page on the HDD and the Share permissions page for shared folders using your network interface tools. If you need help interpreting the settings or understanding access restrictions, let me know!

The new method involves using the network option after the homegroup was removed in the 1803 update.
