FFXIV: Stormblood performance testing Random benchmark results
FFXIV is the sole PC title I’m focusing on right now, especially after buying a new 4K display. I decided to test some benchmarks to decide whether to upgrade my setup. My current rig runs a stock 6700k processor with an 1080p monitor at 1440p resolution and 144Hz G-sync. After extensive trials, I’m satisfied with performance above 60 FPS, and high-end displays aren’t always necessary. I keep the GPU at its maximum setting at around 65% power to reduce heat. Using the Stormblood test, I achieved about 102.7 FPS at 65% power. When I lowered the power limit to stock, I reached roughly 109.5 FPS—still a noticeable jump but not overwhelming. If I boosted the CPU overclock to all cores at 4.2 GHz (stock is 4.0 base with one core boost), I got 100 FPS. It dropped afterward. Windows released an update between reboots, which might have affected results, but I waited after restarting to ensure stability. I’m not feeling strongly enough to redo this test. The new monitor is a 4K model with FreeSync. My Ryzen system includes a Vega 56, so I wanted to know how it would perform. At first, I ran the benchmark at 1440p to compare with my main machine. With stock specs and the Vega 56, I got around 65.2 FPS—about a third lower than my other setup. My previous experience had issues with this model because of its limited clock speeds. If I overclock it to 3.7 GHz across all cores, I achieved 65.4 FPS, which isn’t a big change. I’m not planning to use a 4K monitor at 1440p; let’s see how it performs at full 4K resolution. Still on maximum settings, I got 32.5 FPS. Anyone want to hear about the “cinematic” experience? Alright, lowering the setting to High (Desktop) gave me 38.1 FPS. Then dropping it to Standard (Desktop) improved it to 71.4 FPS. That’s a noticeable difference. Now, is running at 1440p at 4K better than 4K at standard resolution? I ran the game before and noticed quality differences, but in-game performance didn’t change much. With FreeSync enabled, smoothness dropped below 40 FPS before it became too choppy. On the other hand, higher resolution seems to help only slightly—my system used under 3GB VRAM and RAM, which fits well since the game also supports PS4 with shared resources.
