Hello everyone! My father requires a fresh laptop since his current one is outdated and failing. He plans to use it mainly for browsing and day trading. He was advised to get a top-tier graphics card for day trading, though I question that detail. I think he intends to utilize the monitor as well as two additional ones.

He inquired about this specific laptop and now I'm reaching out to the Toms community for advice. Would this model suit him? Is it overkill for his requirements, or does he need something more powerful for day trading? Any insights would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

The only real need for a GPU would be for multiple displays, but a docking station will suffice. Processing isn't handled on his end, so power requirements aren't high. Sufficient memory is available, which should support many browser tabs. A late model i7 with Intel HD750 and 32GB RAM paired with a Thunderbolt dock would be ideal, rather than a gaming system. (The i7 might be more than necessary, but you can usually find better quality options at higher-end parts.)

Please consider if an i5 would work or if a weaker Ryzen model is better. I'm not familiar with the names, so I suggest choosing 32GB and mentioning the docking station.

Certainly, the motivation for opting for higher-end solutions is to achieve features such as Thunderbolt. Unfortunately, with only a few months or years until broad USB4 implementation, Thunderbolt remains the closest viable alternative.

The requirements for day trading vary widely based on your level of commitment. What works for one person may not suit another.

Unless your father is ready to invest 5-7 years (or more) in learning day trading, he’s likely to lose everything he’s put in. Day Trading is a waste of money. I’ve seen many friends try it, maybe for a short time, but they always end up losing every penny they spent. Still, if he decides to keep going, having a high-resolution screen is essential. Those extra pixels give him a clearer view of multiple charts. For instance, instead of just seeing the last 100 "candles," he’ll see the last 400 in the same window. This broader view helps him make better choices. I don’t know the exact graphics card needed for a 4K display, but if it’s his main focus, spending about $500 USD on a better system—spread over a few years—is definitely worth it.

Intel's newest model should support three 4K displays. (If the laptop is 4K)
