Hi everyone. I'm setting up an old laptop for my nephew to enjoy retro games. The specs are Windows XP SP3, a Pentium M with 16.ghz internal graphics, 512mb RAM, DirectX 9c, and updated drivers. Far Cry seems to work at low settings, but the outdoor floor and water textures keep showing as black. Am I right that some graphics functions aren't available on this chip? I plan to upgrade to 2gb RAM if possible, which might help. The game has been patched to version 1.4, though other updates still cause the same issue. Thanks.

.
Yeah, hope something can be done.
You'd be surprised what those Intel iGPU's can do. I used to have an Asus A55 laptop with an i7 3630qm, a decent enough laptop CPU. It had the Intel HD 4000, which in my mind was a piece of junk, even as an integrated GPU! However, after looking into it, much as you are now, I was able to configure it to play BF3!
. I got it at 60fps average, with lots of tinkering with settings, but mainly at medium quality! Keep the faith!

When using the built-in iGPU, there really isn't much to do. Those Intel iGPUs don't get supported by those games either. After installing the newest Intel drivers, your choices are quite limited.

Ok keith12, thanks for the prompt answer! Will report back if I can find a solution. I was suprised the game even loaded and ran to be honest!

Intel GPUs started to work in games around the HD4000 era. The laptop you referred to likely has an 855GM or GM950 chip, which is insufficient for demanding games from the early 2000s like Far Cry. Consider upgrading to a computer with a more powerful GPU.

Exactly, the machine came with an HD4000 iGPU. The laptop he described had an Intel Banias CPU (Celeron M) and a 855GM or 855GME chipset that included a built-in GPU. These are quite standard iGPUs able to handle basic OpenGL graphics. Games from that time, such as Far Cry or Halo, couldn't fully utilize their potential and the best performance was limited to simple surfaces without textures.
