I was running around 30 FPS today, though I usually play at 50 FPS with 1080p and mixed settings—mostly high and ultra. But now I’m getting about 30 FPS again after lowering a setting, even though my specs are 5GB RAM, 8GB GDDR6, and a GTX 960. My PC is struggling the most with this game, and I think it’s a solver issue on other titles too. I saw around 40 FPS on others but didn’t notice anything similar here. Do you have any tips to fix this?
Reduce god rays and shadows, yet Fallout 4 tends to be a quirky title with inconsistent performance. It becomes especially noticeable when mods are included.
Achieving smooth performance in Fallout 4 often feels like a rare occurrence. Fine-tuning the settings is usually necessary to discover what works best. The most problematic elements for FPS in this game are shadows, godrays, AA, lighting, textures, and AO. There are numerous guides available that focus on shadow adjustments, which can help achieve smoother gameplay. Combining godrays with these adjustments tends to produce the best results. I’m using an FX-6300, an HD 7950 graphics card, and with around 300 mods enabled, I maintain roughly 50–60 frames per second, mostly stable except for shadows and godrays.
My F4 output is at its peak, thanks! No need for a hot mic—everything is dialed in.
I managed a solid frame rate and used mixed bud high, but today it's changed. I reduced the settings to medium and still get around 30 fps. Previously, I was playing at high settings with mixed ultras and anti-aliasing for about 140 hours without issues, but now it drops to 30 fps.
I don't know if your FO4 will start immediately, but if it does, I'll share an updated .ini file for testing the adjusted shadow options.
This setup doesn't look optimal. Medium settings on the 960 should be avoided, and ambient occlusion needs to be enabled. The performance hit seems due to object fade, which you've already minimized. In your launcher it shows a low frame rate among other adjustments. Ultra Medium, Medium, Ultra Ultra High Bokeh SSAO High (Weapon Debris) indicates the fade is likely capped. Motion Blur is off, but others are working fine. AA uses TAA. I double-checked and it's running around 59-65 fps in RivaTuner—still only about 30 fps on a 960 seems off. Are you seeing similar issues in other games? One player had to re-seat RAM and the problem resolved.
