Fallout 4 fps being wierd
Fallout 4 has been quite challenging for me lately. It often runs at strange frame rates, usually between 20 and 37 frames per second. This happens regardless of the settings I use—whether low or ultra. Despite having a strong CPU, sufficient RAM, and a capable GPU, the game still struggles to maintain 60 FPS even with high settings. I’m not sure what’s causing this issue and it’s making it difficult to enjoy the game. Please help me out.
Hmm, I thought my specs were all set in settings. But I have an i7 6700, 16gb ram, msi pro z270, asus fml 750ti, corsair vs 650w. The strange part is that other games I play work just fine. Ark, for example, runs without issues. Oh wait, when I open up after making burner or gpu tweaks, the gpu usage hits 100% around 70%-80%. I even tried overclocking but it didn’t help.
Fallout 4 presents some unusual challenges. Your CPU handles the game well, but your GPU struggles. When modding, performance drops further. On a fair setup, the game shifts from CPU to GPU limitations quickly—areas like Boston demand twice the CPU power compared to other zones. Saving files become increasingly difficult as playtime extends. I had to replace my i7 6700k because it couldn’t manage saves smoothly past level 70. The main issue remains VRAM. Even without texture mods, older save files consume more VRAM than any other game I’ve played, sometimes reaching up to 9.5gbs. This high usage stems from NPCs; settlements increase with save levels and also tax the CPU due to scripts. 4gbs is the minimum for a standard version, but 6gbs on a modded title. Avoid the HiRes DLC—it adds about 2gbs of VRAM. Checking performance is straightforward: if CPU usage exceeds 25%, frame rate drops; near 100% GPU usage can cause stutter or CTDs; less than 6gbs leaves you vulnerable to frame loss, especially on HD settings. This Fallout 4 experience is the most demanding I’ve encountered, and it’s been extensively tested. Proceed with patience until your GPU catches up.
I'm not using the high-res texture pack since it's a 55gb download. Boston is really demanding, but Sanctuary is still the same. It's strange because even the main menu is running at low FPS. Plus, none of my components are being fully used, which is confusing me a lot.
Boston is a CPU bottleneck. With an i7 6700k, the CPU usage was about 42%. In Sanctuary it was around 24%. Sanctuary mainly uses I/O resources because of the Red Rocket station nearby. As you move through Sanctuary, the game keeps loading and unloading rockets. Without enough VRAM this slows down frame rates. Using scrap mods like "Scrap Everything" will worsen the situation and eventually make your game unplayable.
I figured out the issue with Fallout. For some odd reason, the FPS keeps fluctuating when the game runs in border-less windowed mode. But in true full screen, the problem disappears. The engine seems to be responsible since its creative engine is quite unique.
It's good to hear. My game behaves consistently whether in any mode, though I did encounter that problem a few years back. They apparently addressed it. To use borderless windows, I need to set the Fallout4Prefs.ini as read-only. Without that, the game opens in an 800 x 450 window at the top left of my 4K display. I hope they would focus on fixing the game for modern systems instead of adding unnecessary content.
