Failed to set up Truenas on the DellPoweredge R815.
Hello! The installation of Truenas Scale or Core on your Dell PowerEdge R815 seems problematic. Both versions trigger FIPS self-test errors during setup. Your system is equipped with the latest BIOS and firmware, which might be causing compatibility issues. You mentioned having a powerful server with multiple high-end CPUs and ample RAM—consider upgrading to Core first, then installing Scale if needed.
Reloaded your boot media and attempted another installation. I faced a comparable issue with an empty ISO on my Ventoy drive. Another possibility is testing TrueNAS Core 11 or 12 first, then moving to versions 13/Scale if needed. You may also need to acknowledge the platform is quite outdated.
I’ve already tested reinstalling the installation media and used various boot options like USB drives, CDs, an SD card, and PXE. Now I’m going to try a more recent version of Truenas. I expect it will work, since I’ve managed to run the latest version on older hardware before.
It isn't functioning perfectly anymore. After inserting the boot drive with Truenas Scale into the R815 and turning it on, the system starts normally. But after a short time, it crashes. When it restarts from the crash, it tries to boot again but gets stuck and opens a terminal. Mounting the drive using its numeric ID works once, but it fails on subsequent reboots, displaying "the drive is in use by another OS." Please help.
