I've been using this CPU on a refurbished machine I purchased about 18 months ago, which originally had 8GB of RAM. I upgraded to a fresh batch of Crucial Ballistix 16GB 3600 modules, and this model is listed as compatible with my motherboard. I expected it wouldn't reach the full 3600 MHz, but I still thought it would outperform the 2866. My voltage sits at 1.375V and the timings are set to XMP levels. From a silicon standpoint, this CPU feels like it's not up to the task—consistent speeds aren't possible, especially at 3.9GHz or more. I usually keep it stock most of the time because my GPU (3070) handles high resolutions well and in that scenario the CPU barely matters (depending on the game). Still, I plan to upgrade it soon. So should I stick with this setup? Is it just a weak memory controller paired with an older CPU, or is there still something left to try? From what I understand, 3200 MHz should be achievable despite the aging Vermeer design. The FF7 remake for PC is just out now, and I'm excited to dive into this long-lost favorite once I resolve these RAM issues!

Choose the L on FirstGen Ryzen just like others did who wanted FastRam to function... Appreciate its capabilities, it operates independently. I’d swap it out if it caused issues, instead of spending time searching for compatibility fixes. You might get the 1800x and opt for a Ryzen 2600 (if the board supports it) to match performance levels—especially with better single-threaded speed and likely RAM support. Plus, your RTX3070 will run smoother in many games. That’s my approach... Is it worth it? I don’t anticipate needing it.
