Extremely long setup duration for Windows 8.1 Professional
Today I completed my build and moved on to install Windows on my Samsung 840 EVO SSD from a USB drive. The whole process took just a few minutes and required a restart to finish. It’s impressive how fast that can be on an SSD! I’ve heard installations on SSDs can take longer, but one minute is really quick. Don’t worry, everything seems to be working well. I plan to install drivers tomorrow and will check back for updates.
I think it relies on the chipset. Aftermarket options are fine, but the original Intel isn't something I'd consider.
With SSDs in RAID0, I can verify that Windows installations proceed quickly.
USB3.0 drives come with built-in memory controllers optimized for 3.0 performance. Most USB2.0 drives are limited not by USB2 itself, but by the capabilities of their memory controller during read/write operations. Therefore, a USB3.0 drive remains quicker than a USB2.0 drive even when connected via a 2.0 port. However, you won’t achieve true USB3.0 speed unless the motherboard’s drivers are installed, since it isn’t supported natively like USB2.
Windows 7 is compatible with USB3.0 via the motherboard's USB controller. The installation was quick, which suggests Windows wasn't running or accessible during the process.
