Hey, My experience in online fps shooters for the past few years have been horrible, I am always, always almost a second behind enemies and my bullets do not register. My isp has been of no help as you would expect. But I was wondering if there is any way I can at least limit that lag. Is there a way to know when I peak during online play, and how do I make myself the peaker instead of getting peaked all the time? Also, is my router the issue here? I have a D-link dsl g-256dg

We're discussing WiFi or cable connection first. If it's wireless, consider switching to a wired setup. While gaming, run two simultaneous pings—one to your router and another to a service like Google—to observe any spikes. This helps identify whether the issue lies with your router or your internet speed. Ideally, you want a consistent low ping between your device and router; any increase should point to the external connection. Check your router's CPU usage to see if resource limits are the cause. A router struggling with resources can lead to lag. If your WAN cable is an RJ-45 rather than optical or coaxial, plug it directly to measure latency and rule out router problems. Some clear points to consider: - Are others using much bandwidth on your local network? - Does your internet plan offer adequate speed and low latency by default? - Are background processes using bandwidth or triggering spikes? - Did you restart both the router and your PC, even if it seems unnecessary? - Do you know where your game server is located, or could that be the issue instead of your connection? - Is your computer performing well enough to handle the task? An overloaded CPU can also result in high latency.

Run a tracert to 8.8.8.8 to see delays across each connection point. Unless the issue lies between your device and your modem, most problems are beyond your control.

There are no delays at all, though the unusual issue is that I struggle with every game I play, including the zombies co-op mode.
