Extensive freezing on the latest system with an i5 10400F and a new board
Hey everyone, I’m looking for a long-term fix. So far I’ve got a new i5 10400F with Q0 stepping and MSI B460M PRO VDH Wi-Fi. Everything seems fine, but under stress tests the CPU hits 67°C max. VRM from Hwiinfo stays around 53°C, and in games it drops to 40-45°C while CPU runs at 38-45°C. When I switch back to my old board and CPU everything works smoothly. I’ve tried this seven times a week, updated the OS five times, and even swapped in new RAM, but nothing helps. I saw a thread on Reddit suggesting setting the CPU to fixed mode—it worked for me. Now it’s stable at 4-4.3 GHz. I’m wondering if this is normal behavior for either the CPU or the board. I’ve attached the frame rate data with stuttering and the old setup was smooth. What do you think?
on screen it looks great, CPU runs smoothly 10-30% during game while GPU handles 0 to 100%. I always use VSync and noticed improvement when I set the CPU fixed in BIOS. My old board’s CPU works fine on those parts too. I’ve been using them for three years now; only after enabling the fixed setting does stuttering go away, otherwise it stays steady around 4-4.3 GHz.
However, VSync alone wasn't responsible for this issue. Another factor likely plays a bigger role.
I checked out 50 threads on various forums and found just one working solution. Above that, it seems the above fix works perfectly. I always keep VSync enabled and don’t like messing with GPU or CPU performance in games. It’s never been a problem before. When I switched to my old board and CPU, everything ran smoothly. No part of me is responsible for this—just those two changes!
Why do you keep winking? There are better ways to set a frame rate limit to reduce load on the hardware than using vsync in 2021. Regardless, I'm not sure what you're asking now. You seem confident you've found a "solution" in using your old CPU and board, whatever those were.
