Last evening I cleaned up an old laptop from the Sony Vaio line with a first-generation i5 processor. I assumed it ran Windows 10 and left it for updates. I saw it displayed 1809, thinking my machines were all newer than that. I wondered if I had overlooked updating this model. Eventually, it warned me that 1809 was nearing its end-of-life date. Checking the manufacturer’s website suggested it was slated to reach EOL in May 2020, but they pushed it back to November 2020. I allowed it to update to 1809 and then offered a major upgrade. I expected a jump to 2004, but instead it provided 1909. I’m curious about the reason behind this decision. Perhaps the device lacks support for 2004, or there are technical constraints. Alternatively, it might simply prefer not to make such a significant upgrade step. For now, since I have 1909 installed on a USB drive, I’ll use that to test and save some bandwidth. I’ll keep an eye out to see if 2004 becomes available later. I won’t push it to 2004 just yet; my main goal is to assess the performance of its Radeon GPU in current titles.
