Explorer frequently launches additional windows in a reduced format rather than retaining previous ones.
Hey everyone, this has been a puzzling problem I've faced for a while. I used to have File Explorer that always opened in a tiny window when I accessed it from the taskbar via the folder icon. Recently, I started investigating and found the issue might be linked to an app called Smart Backup, which is designed for Gigabyte motherboards but isn't available on my Asus Z890M Prime. Since I don’t have that specific app, I’m reaching out for advice from anyone on Asus who might have encountered this. If it helps, here’s a list of the software installed for my hardware: Armoury Crate, Armour Crate Service, Asus Framework Service, Asus Motherboard, Aura Creator, Aura lighting effect add-on, Aura lighting effect add-on x64, Aura Services, Corsair ICUES Software, L-Connect 3 (for my Lian Li SL 120s), and Rog Fan Xpert. I only installed these because they were necessary for controlling my Corsair Nautilus 360 AIO, and I haven’t added anything else. I tried closing and reopening the File Explorer with CTRL but it didn’t fix the problem. I haven’t touched the registry values yet, thinking the issue might be similar to what others with Gigabyte are dealing with. Appreciate any guidance you can offer!
Are you setting up a visual display in your space? Have you explored OpenRGB or SignalRGB options?
Do you have a tool named "Smart Backup" set up? Even though it's a Gigabyte product (based on what you mentioned using Armory Crate, likely an ASUS board), it interferes with File Explorer as you explained.
Everything you've done on the operating system throughout its life—scripts, registry changes, and software installations—could have caused issues. Uninstalling might not fix everything, but it's a solid beginning. I'm unsure what the MB software is meant for, but manufacturers of motherboards are often associated with problematic software. If removing everything still doesn't work, consider a fresh OS. Many users on this forum (including me) discovered that excessive tweaking doesn't improve performance. Software that interacts deeply with the BIOS to manage fans or RGB settings can cause more harm than a simple file edit or image adjustment. Don't assume companies like Asus deliver reliable products. Just uninstall and test again. You can reinstall if necessary. Also, inspect the Task Scheduler and AutoStart to remove any leftover remnants. The de-installer might not fully eliminate everything. Whenever I feel the urge to try something new, I use restore points to undo changes if needed. Or rely on a Sandbox environment.
Thanks for the feedback — it seems a fresh OS setup might be the best solution now. I still rely on my PC for work, and the hassle of logging in repeatedly is really tiring. With 64GB RAM and a powerful CPU, I could easily keep many folders open without any performance issues if needed.
